Privacy Policy
Who we are
Moniq is a travel-money app for iOS and Android made by VGX ("we", "us"). It converts currencies, calculates tips, tracks trip expenses and budgets, splits costs between people and reads receipts with the camera. This policy explains what we do — and do not — do with your information. It is short because we collect very little.
The short version
- No account, no sign-up. We do not know who you are.
- Your trips, expenses, budgets, people, balances and settings live on your phone, not on our servers. We have none.
- No advertising, no ad networks, no cross-app tracking, no sale of data.
- The app talks to the network for exactly four things: exchange rates, weather for your destination, crash reports, and purchase validation. Each is described below.
What stays on your device
Everything you create in Moniq is stored locally, inside the app's own sandbox on your phone:
- Trips, expenses, budgets, categories and notes you enter or scan.
- People you travel with, splits, balances and recorded payments. A person in Moniq is just a name you typed — we never read your contacts.
- Your World map — the countries you mark as visited or planned.
- Settings such as your home currency and home country, and a cache of exchange rates so the converter works offline.
We have no access to any of it. It leaves your device only if you back your phone up with Apple or Google, and then it is covered by their backup policies, not ours. Deleting the app deletes the data; Profile → Reset does the same without uninstalling.
Camera and photos
Receipt scanning uses the camera or a photo you pick. The image is read by text recognition running on your device; the amount, merchant, date and category it finds are saved as an expense, and the image itself is not uploaded anywhere.
Suggesting countries for your World map (optional) reads the location tag (GPS metadata) stored inside the photos in your library, again on your device, to work out which countries you have photographed in. The photos and their locations never leave your phone, and you can revoke the permission at any time in your system settings. Moniq does not ask for, and does not use, your live location.
What briefly touches the network
Moniq makes four kinds of network requests. None of them carries your name, email, contacts or precise location, because the app has none of those to send.
| What | Who | What is sent | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange rates | Frankfurter | Currency codes and dates | To convert money. Rates are cached on the device for offline use. |
| Weather | MET Norway | The coordinates of a reference city for your trip's destination country, taken from our own built-in country data — not your location | To show the weather tile on Home. |
| Crash reports | Firebase Crashlytics (Google) | Stack trace, device model, OS version, app version, a random installation identifier created by Crashlytics | To find and fix bugs. Reports contain no names, emails or money data. |
| Purchases | RevenueCat, with Apple App Store / Google Play | An anonymous app user ID, the store's purchase receipt, product identifiers, price and currency | To validate a Moniq Premium purchase and restore it after a reinstall. Payment itself is handled by Apple or Google; we never see card numbers. |
Like any internet request, these carry your IP address to the receiving server. We do not store IP addresses ourselves.
What we do not collect
- No accounts, names, emails, phone numbers or contacts.
- No live or background location.
- No advertising identifiers, no cross-app or cross-site tracking, no ad networks, no analytics profiles.
- No copies of your expenses, receipts or balances on any server.
Your rights (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA and similar laws)
Because your data is on your device, you already hold it: you can read, edit and delete it in the app, and remove all of it by deleting the app. For the two services that keep something server-side — Crashlytics crash reports and RevenueCat purchase records — email us and we will ask them to delete the records tied to your installation. We do not sell personal information and do not use it for targeted advertising.
Children
Moniq is not directed at children under 13 (or the age of digital consent where you live), and we do not knowingly collect information from them. As described above, the app collects almost nothing from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in any material way, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, note the change in the app's release notes.
